Very cool! I'm digging the first design (the second one is awesome too, but the first one is my fav). Looks like one of those old woodcut illustrations. Did you commission an artist to do these or did you use old antique images?
ReplyDeleteThe images came from a 1890s book with English & German vocabulary words. I think its actually for children and has over 2000 illustrations. The style is very similar to Edward Gorey. We picked 2 images from the book , one that was safe for anywhere and the other that may not be good in all situations. We didnt make childrens sizes with the gag image for this reason. In the future we were thinking of changing out the images for the next run of shirts.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for answering my question, and I love these kind of images, I grew up in Germany and almost all my textbooks as a child were illustrated with black and white crosshatched illustrations. I'm excited to see more images from obscura.
ReplyDeleteHey there, Love the show! If I ever go to NYC I want to bring in my crocheted eyeballs in a jar http://www.flickr.com/photos/47193557@N08/5229796838/ Looking forward to the new episodes!
ReplyDeleteS.
Just saw the Discovery show for the first time. What fun! Love your store.
ReplyDeleteI noticed from watching the episodes that there is a old anatomy ear chart above the cash register. How much are you asking for it?
ReplyDeleteEar chart is still available. It dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and is in good condition. Price is $250 plus shipping....
ReplyDeleteHi- Thanks for getting back to me. I am looking for something more around $100. It is pretty nice though, thank-you...
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for a human skull for my husband for a gift. Do you have any and how much are they?
ReplyDeleteJust saw your show.. Fabulous! I live in Philadelphia and I am a big fan of the Medical oddities on display in the Mütter Museum at the Philadelphia College of Physicians. If they had a gift shop, It would be Obscura!!! Can't wait to visit you on my next trip to NYC
ReplyDeleteMike a....are you married? I think you are so cute and love your oddities! Let me know! Glow
ReplyDeleteLove the shop! It's about time a show is aired with such a variety of dark yet colorful items and customers alike! I live in Alabama and will unlikely be visiting NY any time soon but will be keeping Oddities on my DVR. I look forward to seeing some of your items on site and hopefully will be able to purchase one or more. BTW.. Nice shirts! Will be getting one as well!
ReplyDeleteGreat title for the show, Oddities. Perfect for the odd items in the shop and descriptive of the colorfully odd people you deal with. It is truly awesome how you treat such "colorful" personalities with kindness. We have become fans of yours and your clients. Our favorite client, the morbidly sweet Laura, she's a sweetheart. Good luck! Michael
ReplyDeleteI love your show! It definitely explores the deepest, darkest places of the human mind.
ReplyDeleteXOXO,
Claudia

Nice...but a question or two...
ReplyDelete- Are the designs on the Front, Back, Breast, Sleeve?
- Are the designs BIG, centerd on front or back, or like logo size for the breast area?
Thanks for all the kind words. You are all very sweet. .. The shirts have the design centered and big on the front of the shirt.
ReplyDeleteme wants it. my precious.
ReplyDeleteAny chance for a 2x size?
ReplyDeleteChris

ReplyDeleteDude. That lovely lady Laura? The one who made the dress for Evan?!?!?! SHE IS BEAUTIFUL! I mean Evan is hot too....but I gut a thing for Laura. She made a beautiful dress....used to be a mortician....and is gorgeous. I love her voice. She would be a great Janis Joplin type singer with the right work. I need to meet that chick. Too bad I'm in South Boston, Massachusetts haha she is probably married anyways I love this show!
ReplyDeleteAny chance the shirts will come in a dark color? White does not last long around my kids. Although I still will buy one. :-)
ReplyDeleteThe shirts are black and the printing is white. The graphic posted is just to show what the designs look like.
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing your aesthetic. i used to feel all alone in my love of the old and forgotten and now i know there are people who are even more passionate and informed about this genre of collecting.

Just bought a t-shirt! My husband and I are collectors and we both love your show!
ReplyDeleteWe love your show and are always amazed and intrigued not only by your treasures but also your customers. My 6 year old is your biggest fan. We are coming to New York next week from TN and I really want to bring her to the store if I get a chance. I must have a t-shirt for her too!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the 2nd season... I can't believe the books wasn't real! Thank goodness I guess
ReplyDeleteJust happened across Oddities last night while looking for something unique and entertaining On Demand. After watching one of the 2 min. teasers I proceeded to watch all of the other episodes in order back to back. I love this show! Trying to plan a trip to NY just so I can come check out all of these incredibly unusual items in person. Congrats on season 2! I look forward to many more episodes. The shirts look great. Would like to purchase using a credit card however. Keep up the weird!
ReplyDeleteCannot wait to visit!
ReplyDeleteI sure do love them. Any chance you'll have a "girl's" cut in the future?
ReplyDeleteI am a big MC Escher fan and I was wondering could it be possible to make the painting bond of union in pig skin but 3d rather like almost like an articulated skull or something to that effect or something to that nature ? I think it would be very cool looking well since I am his biggest fan in the whole wide world !
ReplyDeleteCool Shirt we are watching the shrunken head episode as I write. Pretty interesting. Tourist head worth 10k crazy.
ReplyDeleteI love your show! I found it months ago and have been telling people all about it...I finally have a good tv show to look forward to every week! The episode with Bruce Modvic was very interesting...my father is in the process of reconstructing an old home and turing it into a Victorian like home and I have been searching for something to get him as a house warming gift...now I know where to look! Thank you again for a great show and when I'm in the city I am defintly going to plan on stopping in! BTW...what happened to "The Curd?"
ReplyDeleteYour show is fascinating. I enjoy it a lot. Please get the online general sales up as soon as you can. I have a friend in DC who would love your wares. Also, he is a bit beyond 2XL, so can you check with your shirt vendor if special order larger sizes are possible? Thanks.

Dear Obscura Antiques and Oddities,
ReplyDeleteomg. Oddities is the BEST show i have ever seen. my brother came across it on Memorial Day weekend. i watched more tv that day than i normally do in FIVE YEARS. my family was all together down at my grandparents' house and we spent an entire day on the couch, glued to the tv, watching a marathon of Oddities. it. was. amazing. i am a big fan of Edgar; he's so awesome! my family and i hope to visit Obscura in the near future and hopefully run into some bizarre and cool people! not to mention check out the antiques in the store! thank you so much for this awesome store made into an awesome show, and keep up the good work!

ReplyDeleteHello there,
ReplyDeleteI am hoping to order a shirt for my Dad for his Birthday...are they now available?
Mobiusparadox says:
ReplyDeleteI was viewing one of your episodes on July 21, 2012 and it was my understanding that you were seeking a pelt that had the girth of a horse, but the height of a giraffe. I simply do NOT understand why you did not search for the pelt of an okapi. That would have given you multiple features: girth of an okapi/horse; the legs of a zebra and a pseudo-neck of a "less than mature" giraffe." GOOD LUCK NEXT TIME.
